We all have times in our lives when things aren’t going the way we planned. For some of us it’s an accident that causes a traumatic brain injury. For others it’s the return from active duty with problems we inadvertently inflict on our families. Sometimes it’s something we’ve dealt with since birth, like a learning disability or delayed development. And for a few it’s the tragic loss of someone close to us.
All of these challenges mean changing roles within a family or group and even the most mundane daily chore take on insurmountable proportions. reConnect, Inc. is a non-profit Occupational Therapy based organization that does one thing and does it well - help people Function to the best of their ability in society.
For those seeking to Communicate better, Interact more appropriately, and Interpret Information more correctly, reConnect uses dynamic activities to reach these goals. The largest active program is reQUEST, an equine assisted learning option that uses horses as part of the
therapy team. Because horses are herd animals and depend on their ability to scan and read the environment for survival, they are uniquely suited to help us SEE what we might be missing. Horses react to emotions such as feelings of anxiety or contentment, acts of aggression, confidence, and isolation, creating a visual and kinesthetic lesson that is much less threatening and easier to process than traditional office therapy might be.
Staff, couples and families develop the ability to work as a team with specific roles and rules for communication. Those with trouble regulating their actions can see what affect they have on others and can learn to moderate their behavior by getting immediate feedback from the horses. And all of us can learn to just get done what we need to, even when things seem impossible.
We can learn, through the horses, to function in our new “herd”, and we can use the power of horses to change lives.
